New Regulations Enable Employees to have “Fit Notes” Signed by other Healthcare Professionals

From 1 July 2022, the Social Security (Medical Evidence) Regulations 1976 (SI 1976/615) and the Statutory Sick Pay (Medical Evidence) Regulations 1985 (SI 1985/1604) allow registered nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists and physiotherapists to sign “fit notes”. The regulations also insert a definition of “healthcare professional” which includes doctors and the four new professions that can sign “fit notes.” The aim is to assist the pressure on GPS by reducing their workloads and making it easier for people to obtain GP appointments also.
